Music and Arts Camp
Electives offer something for everyone!
About the classes
Each day, children will participate in a rich program that includes
- Chapel
- Choir
- Recreation
- Art for All
- Daily Devotions
- Three Electives (except Primary campers (K - 1))
A capstone performance on the last day of camp is an opportunity for parents and families to see and hear the sounds of camp.
Electives
Electives are offered for campers in grades 2 through 8 with the curriculum adjusted to be age appropriate.
- Campers choose three electives during registration, one from each of the pairs below.
- Each elective is limited to 10 campers per age group.
- Primary campers (kindergarten and 1st grade) have a preset schedule and do not choose electives.
Elective Pair 1
Macrame
Join Lauren Merritt, the artist behind Merritt Macrame, for a fun and engaging crafting experience! In this elective, Lauren will guide you step-by-step as you create your very own macrame project to take home. Each student will also contribute to a collaborative project that will be displayed after Friday's Hour of Sharing. All skill levels are welcome, no experience necessary.
The main objectives of this elective are to:
- spark a love and interest in fiber arts,
- instill confidence in basic macrame knots
- establish pride and ownership in a large group project that demonstrates the beauty that can be created by working together.
Handbells
Experienced elementary music educator, Darin Riedel, returns to teach our handbell elective. Playing handbells is fun! Campers will grow musically as we experience ringing in an ensemble. Throughout the week we will learn bell techniques and musical concepts while making beautiful music! We recommend that campers be able to read music to get the most from this elective.
Elective Pair 2
For Elective Pair 2, campers in grades 2-5 will choose from either Clay or Ukulele; campers in grades 6-8 will choose from either Clay or Guitar.
Clay
A popular elective returns to Music and Arts Camp this year, taught by Corinne Schuster! Explore clay techniques and create a unique sculpture in this elective. We’ll sculpt, paint and glaze our creations and display them in the Friday showcase. This a great time to get a little messy and experience the natural calm you get from handling clay.
Ukulele (for grades 2-5)
Music teacher, Katie Kirschmann, from Laura Jeffrey Academy, is back this year to teach Ukulele for campers in grades 2-5 (Lowers and Middles). Students will have an opportunity to learn alongside one another in a group setting to play songs from a variety of genres. They will learn how to count beats and transition between chords. These skills are transferable to their own learning should they decide to continue with the ukulele or another fretted instrument. Differentiated instruction will allow beginners to feel successful, as well provide challenges to those who have played before, so that everyone can learn and grow!
Guitar (for grades 6-8)
A new elective to camp this year, available for campers in grades 6-8 (Uppers).
Guitar class will be taught by Katie Kirschmann. It is strongly recommended that campers who take this elective have previously taken ukulele, or have recent experience on guitar. Campers will learn to read various forms of guitar music including lead sheets, TABS, and chord diagrams. Songs taught will span various genres blues, folk, rock, pop and gospel, with something for everyone to learn and enjoy!
Elective Pair 3
Making Music
A new elective to camp this year!
Do you like to make music up? Would you like to find out how? In this elective we
will compose brand new melodies and rhythm for singing and playing. It's really not hard, and it's really fun! The good part is that there are no wrong notes! This elective will be taught by organist and composer Dr. David Cherwien.
Yoga
In this elective, young yogis will experience poses, stretches, breath work, games and relaxation. We will play and explore in a non-competitive environment. We’ll work on strength, balance, self-confidence, respect for self and others, as well as finding joy and vitality in our bodies. The elective will be taught by Lori Buggs from Yogadevotion.com.
